Research

My research focus is on robust methods for image and video transmission.

My current activities are concentrated around the following topics

  • joint source-channel coding/decoding of images and video
  • image restoration
  • resource allocation in multimedia systems

The main research thrusts I am currently involved in are:

  • Iterative Decoding of Video This work stems from a grant from the National Science Foundation for improved decoding of video sequences. We have examined the problems of location of synchronization codes in data streams, utilizing redundancy in data to improve decoding, and using spatial and other information to restore image data following loss. This work continues by linking these areas together to develop iterative decoders.
  • Coder Rate Allocation Results from a grant from the National Science Foundation prompted continuing work in the area of rate allocation between source and channel coders and between concatenated channel coders. We have examined allocation of source and channel coding rate between coders as well as between frames and frame components and have developed operational rate allocation methods. Currently we are considering rate allocation between coders in a concatenated channel code under various scenarios.
